I named this house plan the “Rocking Chair Cottage” because it reminds me of the simple country homes where you would see a few folks gathered on the long front porch. The brick piers with the slanted box columns are such an inviting detail. From the porch, a full lite entry door and large windows visually connect the interior to the porch.
My favorite feature of this design is the way the stairway goes up by the window. By using wood railing and attractive trim, this area could feel like a piece of built-in furniture that connects to the upstairs. The downstairs has a quaint Living area with a “non-chimney” fireplace. One of the “wow factors” of this home is the way the dining and kitchen and breakfast come together into one large room with lots of light. Add in a family reunion and there will be no lack of space! A small Mud Porch at the rear could lead to a patio or uncovered deck of your choosing. The Owner’s Suite is large with all the features a large Owner’s Suite would have, but let’s talk about the upstairs!
When I designed this home it was for a site that looked towards a mountain. When you reach the top of the stairs, the purpose of the window in the front dormer becomes evident. The area created there would serve as a great office or study, and it looks over to the foyer below, making it an even more fun space to occupy. A large Flex Space also looks over the stair but this space, thanks to the egress window, could be enclosed for another bedroom if desired. The two upstairs bedrooms are well sized with nice closet space and a shared bath. Areas that will be under the roof could be accessed for additional storage OR can be converted to “fun space” for small children to explore, while you sit in your rocking chair on the porch.
